Asses of the Gods

There are an unbelievable number of statues in Rome. The place is practically littered with amazing ruins and marble statues. When going through Rome's museums, you pretty much have to put on some sort of filter - there's just too much information to take in all at once. The filter I chose was looking for beautiful bodies (and body parts), particularly intact penises (which were a part that was deeply appreciated by the Romans and rarely survived to modern times). This turns out to be a pretty good way to view Roman sculpture. Hey, he's got a nice ass. Oh, whaddya know, another Apollo. (There are lots of Apollos and Dionysuses in the Gallery of Ass, although the nicest tail probably goes to Hermes.) So, appreciate these beautiful bodies as the Romans undoubtably did - not only for their artistic mastery but for their physical beauty as well, the Roman ideal of the human form.

Terme di Diocleziano, Rome, marble statue

Unfortunately, the photo I have of the sign accompanying this statue is blurry.

Terme di Diocleziano, Rome, sign

I really enjoy taking photos of views that you just never see in the guidebooks. Too bad the front came out blurry.

Terme di Diocleziano, Rome, Aphrodite

Another view of this unusual Aphrodite. The other photos are on the main Terme di Diocleziano page. It is a 3rd century AD copy of a 1st or 2nd century BC original.
