The forests of Europe are different from the forests of the US. Yes, the oaks are twisted into strange knotwork and the fungal flora is decidedly dissimilar... but perhaps most surprising to me is that there's a cafe in the middle of the woods. That's a restaurant and bar
to the Americans. The buildings are of a typical Dutch style and are arguably historic in their own right. Here's a photo of Chris, Eric, and Elke in the garden of the cafe.
And Chris was nice enough to take a picture of Elke, me, and Eric. See, that's *two* photos with actual human beings in them. TWO! And now back to our fungus.
An Amanita just hatching
from its universal veil. Can you picture this as a champignon growing inside a matching white cup? That is more or less what is happening. The univeral veil will leave a cup below (already visible in this example) and patches or warts of white tissue on the cap. Only Amanitas have this universal veil.
And if it's lucky, it'll grow up to look like this guy. The shot is slightly out of focus, but I like the ferns in the background anyway.
A cluster of purple mushrooms. These may be slightly older, drier versions of the purple mushroom on the first page, or they might not.
The sun was starting to set, and we wanted to make it to the beach, so I slowed down on the mushroom photography and picked up the walking pace. I did pause to take a photo of this pretty little fungus in among the lichens. I think it is a tiny example of a Lepiota.
